Reevaluating Bakhtin’s philosophy as a worldview for virtual ethnography in science education

This paper explores the dialogic contact between virtual ethnography and Bakhtinian thought. It contextualizes metalinguistics and its relationship with science education and anthropology to explore concepts and principles of virtual ethnography developed by Christine Hine to use them as a methodological framework. It discusses the differences between dialogism and dialogue to deal with the importance of fieldwork as a responsible act. It examines the recognition of statements as cultural artifacts on the internet as a world of cyberculture and ethnographic of descriptions as metalinguistic interpretations. It is concluded by synthesizing reflections in an analysis of the arguments in the public debate on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the 2019 Amazon fires. It is observed that people on X sought not only to express opinions, but also to highlight something that 280 characters could not convey, something that changed in nature from utterance to utterance over the course of days. However, it is concluded that the ideological division between interlocutors, critics and apologists of the Bolsonaro government, remained, even though the discursive practices of both were relatively similar.
