Ethics and integrity in Human and Social Sciences research in Brazil:
aspects of regulation and researcher training

This paper aims to present reflections on research ethics and integrity in Brazil. From a synthesis of the existing literature on research ethics regulation (procedural ethics), ethics education for researchers and criticism to ethics review systems based on biomedical research, it advocates the following necessary measures: a) going beyond the ethics view in research such as the ethical approval by a Research Ethics Committee; b) creating models of ethics assessment based on the specificities of Humanities; c) broadening the ethics and integrity view, which is characterized by isolated initiatives, towards the defense of the creation of an “ethics and integrity ecosystem”, involving multiple agents and institutions. The study highlights that going beyond the regulation (procedural ethics) to understand and act from a broader view of ethics and integrity is a challenge for demanding a broader view of ethics, research and the researcher’s role in current society.
