Abstract

This article analyzes the participation of women in university extension activities at Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso between 1970 and 1985, aiming to understand the absence and fragmentation of documents as elements that produced visibilities and invisibilities regarding women’s presence within the institution. The period analyzed encompasses the creation of the Federal University of Mato Grosso and the first years of the institutionalization of university extension, marked by the context of university reorganization and the military dictatorship in Brazil. The study is grounded in New Cultural History and articulates documentary sources and oral testimonies produced within the institutional sphere. The results indicate that women were part of the daily routine of university extension through administrative, technical, and community practices, although many of these activities appear only indirectly in institutional archives due to historical practices of document production and preservation.

Sandra Jung de Mattos, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso - UFMT

Doctor of Education from the Graduate Program in Education (PPGE) at the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT). Federal Public Servant – Administrative Technician in Education – Pedagogue at UFMT. She holds a specialization in Rural Education from the Federal University of Paraná and in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Inclusive Education from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Mato Grosso. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Pedagogy with qualifications in School Administration and Early Grades from the State University of Central-West Paraná. She has worked as a professor in the Pedagogy program at the Faculty of Accounting Sciences and Administration of Vale do Juruena – AJES, as a teacher and coordinator of the Humanities Department at the Alternative Center for Youth and Adult Education (CEJA), and as a pedagogical advisor at the Senai Juína Unit. She served as Extension Supervisor (2014–2016) and as Extension Coordinator at UFMT (2016–2022), and is the current coordinator since 2024. Her work focuses on university extension activities, and her research encompasses themes such as Women’s Education, Women’s History, University Extension, Higher Education, the Military Dictatorship, and the digitalization and preservation of documentary sources from basic and higher education institutions. She is part of the Research Line in Culture, Memory and Theories of Education and is a member of the Research Group on History of Education and Memory (GEM) at PPGE/UFMT.

Elisabeth Figueiredo de Sá, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso - UFMT

She holds a degree in Pedagogy, a Master’s in Education from the Federal University of Mato Grosso (2000), and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of São Paulo (2006). She completed part of her doctoral studies at the University of Porto (2004). In 2009, she concluded a postdoctoral fellowship at the School of Education of the University of São Paulo; in 2018, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Federal University of Uberlândia; and in 2023, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Coimbra. She worked as a teacher in Basic Education at the Municipal Department of Education of Cuiabá, serving as pedagogical coordinator and school principal (1988–2009). She also served as a higher education lecturer at UNIVAG University Center (2003–2006), where she was Coordinator of the Pedagogy Program and later Manager of the Humanities Division. She worked as a substitute professor at the Federal University of Goiás (2008–2009).

Since 2009, she has been a faculty member in the Department of Theories and Foundations of Education at the Federal University of Mato Grosso, teaching History of Education in the Pedagogy Program and History of Education and Technologies in the Educational Technology Teaching Degree Program. She has been a permanent faculty member of the Graduate Program in Education at UFMT since 2009. She organized the First Meeting on the History of Education of the Central-West Region (2011), the Seventh Brazilian Congress on the History of Education (2013), the 27th Education Seminar: Debates on Education, Research and Innovations, the 12th Luso-Brazilian Congress on the History of Education (COLUBHE) in 2021, the Seventh Meeting on the History of Education of the Central-West Region in 2024, and the 16th UFMT Graduate Studies Exhibition in 2025. She served as Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Education at UFMT (2019–2021) – Ordinance No. 429/SGP/2019. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Educação Pública (A2 ranking), a member of the Brazilian Society for the History of Education and ANPED, and served as a full member of the Scientific Committee in the 2022–2023 biennium. She has led the Research Group on History of Education and Memory (GEM/UFMT) since 2009, is a researcher in the Women’s Education Research Group (UFRN) and the Interdisciplinary Center for Studies and Research in the History of Education (USP), and coordinates the Center for the History and Memory of Education (CHME/IE/UFMT). She is the author of books and articles in the field of History of Education. She currently serves as Pro-Rector for Graduate Education at UFMT (Rector’s Ordinance No. 642, October 16, 2024).
